About Me

About Me

I am a recent graduate from the Game Design & Development program at Wilfrid Laurier University as part of the first graduating class from GDD with an Honours Bachelor’s Degree of Fine and Applied Arts.

Game Philosophy

I strive to make complex games with simple core mechanics that are easily learned but hard to master, in other words, games that have a good flow. I believe that games should be intuitive to play and that a rule book should only be accessed by the player to clear up very specific situations that might arise. I highly regard feedback as an essential part of the creation process and thus actively seek it out to get a variety of perspectives and create the best product possible.

Interests & Expertise

I am highly interested in the project management side of game development in order to utilize my strengths in organization and problem solving to seek out ways to simplify the process, increasing productivity and ease of production. I also enjoy designing user interfaces because it allows me to tap into my minimalist view of the world to ensure a simple and elegant experience that avoids cluttering the user’s screen.

What is Gamification?

Gamification is the art of motivation

Gamification is the application of game design elements and principles in non-game contexts to help motivate people to do things. It utilizes the tried and true techniques used by game developers to engage players and applies them to non-game experiences to motivate actions that can help improve a business. Gamification takes an existing experience and applies to it the motivational game design principles that make games so engaging.

Why Gamify?

Gamification promises to make the dull things in life fun and colourful

Gamification is changing the way businesses operate by employing new ways to build customer relationships that result in long term engagement and high customer and employee loyalty. It is effective because it taps into our primal desires we have for community, feedback, achievement, and reward. With more and more companies gamifying their businesses every day to gain a competitive edge, it’s hard for other businesses not to fall behind the curve unless they gamify their operations as well.

Why Gamify?

Why Me?

Throughout my undergraduate studies in Game Design and Development, I was given a lot of hands-on experiences designing and developing games because of the experiential learning opportunities provided by the Brantford Games Network Lab (BGNLab). My program coordinator and professor, Scott Nicholson, believes strongly in experiential learning to best prepare students for the work environment and thus created the program around that premise. Due to this, he was able to get a partnership between Red Bull and the BGNLab to create the escape puzzles for the Red Bull Mind Gamers Escape Room World Championships. With his wealth of knowledge, experience, and influence in the gaming world, Dr. Nicholson not only taught us how to make games, but also about meaningful design and how to make games to change the world no matter the medium on which it is played.

My capstone project for my final year of my degree required us as a class to develop games for a client in groups throughout an 8-month period, giving us a real client experience and a shipped title. I also worked on research and ideation for a citizen science game for the University of Waterloo funded through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Apart from my games related interests and experiences, I am also highly interested in leadership and entrepreneurship and have graduated with a minor in leadership. During my final year in university I took part in the Brantford Pitch Competition and the Collegiate Leadership Competition in which I/my team placed in 3rd and 2nd place respectively. I was also the recipient of the Dean’s Honour Roll and the Congeniality award from Wilfrid Laurier University which are testaments to my hard work and ability to work well with others.
